How to find the exact location of a mobile phone...Find my iPhone

Written at:: 2014-07-27 08:35:14

Lots of people wonder whether it is possible to see the exact location of a mobile phone just by knowing its number. This is, fortunately, not possible through our cellzio.com.

You cannot hide, for no one

Just imagine what that would mean; by typing in his or her cell phone number everyone would be able to see exactly where any given individual is located. How useful for burglars who found your phone number on eBay, once you're far away enough from home they will strike.

Women who are victim of domestic violence would have to get rid of their only link with the outside world, their phone, to ensure their safety.

But even in more innocent matters; imagine that one day you don't feel like having visitors; wherever you hide they will find you.

Still, we can imagine that there are times that you would really like to know what someone's exact location is.

Legitimate reasons to follow someone closely

Parents who want to know where their children are on a Saturday evening, supervisors of mentally handicapped children or elderly people with heart disease, colleagues of journalists in dangerous areas. These are just a few cases where it makes sense that knowing only the country is not enough, they need to know an exact location. In these cases, a precise location can be obtained, but only with permission of the person being monitored.

In order to be able to determine an exact location on the mobile phone a program has to be activated. Sometimes there is already a standard option on the device present. In other cases it will need to be installed. I will discuss the best-known option for the iPhone in this article. In a subsequent article, the Android option will be discussed.

Find my iPhone

On your iPhone you'll find the standard option "Find my iPhone".

You can activate it by:

Settings - Privacy - Location Services - Find my iPhone

From the moment you activate the "Find my iPhone" option, you and the persons you authorize are able to remotely access the iPhone. The location of the iPhone can be viewed on a map, messages can be sent to the phone, and it is possible to lock and even erase the device remotely.

On your computer or smartphone go to https://www.icloud.com and log in with your iCloud account information

Click "find my iPhone"

See the exact location of the device (accurate up to several meters).

Also when the device gets lost or stolen

If you ever misplace your iPhone or it gets stolen, the "Find my iPhone" feature has some more sophisticated options to limit the damage.

Since iOS 7 the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch are equipped with a so called "Activation lock". With this feature the following actions can be taken:

Switch off the "find my iphone" function on the device
Play a sound on your device to help you locate it
Remotely delete all of your personal information from the device
Use "lost mode" to lock and track your device
Re-activate the device and use it

By using the activation lock your personal data stays safe and and it increases the chance of getting it back. Even when you wipe the device remote, activation lock will prevent others to re-activate the device without your permission. The only thing you have to do is leave the iPhone switched on and remember your Apple ID and password.

Activate "lost mode"

If you have lost your device (or if it gets stolen) you activate "lost mode" in "find my iPhone" as soon as possible.

After you enable lost mode the screen of your device is locked with a four digit passcode. You can also choose to display a message with your phone number on the screen to help you get it back. Even after you remotely erased all personal data from your device, this message will still be displayed.

While the activation lock works on the background and makes it difficult for a thief to use or sell it, in lost mode the person that found your device will clearly be warned that it is still your property and can not be re-activated without your permission and password.

This and more information on the "Find my iPhone" feature can be found on Apple's official support web page:
